10/100/1000 Ethernet ESD Protection

10/100/1000 Ethernet ESD Protection

Design Notes:

Protection Application:
The data signals used in an Ethernet port vary between 1.0V and 2.5V, with maximum data rates of 1000Mbps (or 1Gb). At this speed, the capacitance of the suppressor needs to be taken into account. The signal lines to be protected from ESD and lightning transients include Tx+/- and Rx+/-.
Solution Description:
As shown at the left, a low-capacitance TVS Diode Array (SP3002) is being used to provide up to 12kV ESD protection.
Companion Solutions:
If higher levels of ESD protection are needed, the SP3050 (20kV) can be used. If smaller form factors are required the SP3004 is a good option providing the same level of ESD protection in a SOT563 package.
Regulatory Issues:
The IEC 61000-4-2 will be the most appropriate standard for ESD testing to verify that the Ethernet port is not susceptible to ESD events.
